Shona RubensU12 Coach
Go Play Outside! When Shona Rubens was little she liked to play outside. Her parents and her brother liked to play outside. She has fond memories of playing outside. Fast forward to today and those memories include six national championships, 63 World Cup starts, and two Winter Olympic Games. But Shona relishes some of the other memories of playing outside just as much. “If there is a sport or activity outdoors, I am all over it. Outdoors is way cooler than indoors,” says Rubens. “I really want to share my passion for skiing and ski racing, but I also want to share my passion for playing outside. We live in a very unique place that is so beautiful and has so much to offer from a sport and recreation perspective.” Shona moved from the Lake Louise Ski Club to the Alberta Ski team and the Canadian National Ski team. She has seen a lot along the way. An avid free skier, Shona loves to see athletes rip inside AND outside of race courses. “There is more to skiing than gates… a lot more.” What advice does the LLSC Alumni and two time Olympian have to offer young skiers today? That’s simple: “Go play outside!”

Amelia Gillese35 Day Program Coach
In the spring of 1994, at age 14 months, my parents strapped the smallest pair of rental skis they could find to my tiny feet. My older brothers took turns taking me up and down the rope tow at Fernie Ski Resort, and I had a blast! Skiing has been a huge part of my life ever since then. I started racing for Snow Valley Ski Club when I was 4, and continued racing until I was 17, including 2 years of FIS. I eventually quit racing to start my uni identity career, and I quickly found a love for coaching. I’ve been coaching since 2009 and have earned my CSCF DL, CSIA 1, and NCCP 1. Since then I have also graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in psychology and minoring in music. I am super passionate about working with kids- on and off the snow! Besides being a ski coach and instructor, I have also worked as a summer camp counsellor and daycare attendant. I have worked with kids as young as 2 months old, and as old as 16 years, and I have loved all of it. My career goal is to be a Play Therapist and children’s Psychotherapist, but skiing will always be a part of my life!
